Let's talk about Mary Bard Jensen and her very kind and patient husband, Dr. Clyde Reynolds Jensen.
Some relatives of mine visited Seattle and met Dr. Clyde Jensen. It was many years after Mary Bard Jensen passed away. Clyde Reynolds Jensen valued Mary Bard's work very much and knew so many details. They had the same good marriage like Sydney and Darsie Bard. Dr. Clyde Reynolds Jensen's nickname was Jens. It's my surname. Funny!

Betty MacDonald colour movie

We have to find somebody like Mike Gordon, Bill Gates or Dagobert Duck who might be interested in purchasing Betty MacDonald's filmed interview. It's such an important document and every Betty MacDonald Fan should see it. We need some wealthy and prrrrominent people to be successful. Let's be optimistic!

It's a very good idea to ask our great Betty MacDonald Fan Club Honory Members, authors and artists Monica Sone, Darsie Beck and Gwen Grant about their experiences of chickens.

Yes, as it happens I do have some experience of chickens. When I was a girl, my father kept hens. And I actually wrote a book about keeping hens, FOX FIRE, and the different attitudes of two children to hens and foxes. We kept the hens at the bottom of the garden in a well protected, as we thought, hen run but one morning, we found them all dead. The foxes had got them. My Dad redoubled his efforts after this and the hen run eventually became so secure, it was all anyone could do to get in it to feed them!
The hens we had were a bit confrontational, I'm sorry to say, for when we went to get the eggs, we had to be careful as they would peck your hands. There were times though, when it was nice to go in and sometimes be allowed to stroke some feathers.
I'll draw a veil over the killing process when the hens were ready for the pot. I always made myself scarce at that point. However, my Mum taught me how to do everything from skinning and preparing a rabbit through gutting and cleaning a fish to plucking a chicken
and cleaning it ready for the pot. All I have to say to all of these activities is Yuk.

Betty MacDonald Interview filmed in colour

Hello, dear Betty MacDonald Fan Club Fans,
Anita, it's so much fun reading your message about owning chickens.
We laughed tears when I printed out your story yesterday. Our family and friends were sitting in the garden. Two friends own even some chickens. One of them praised them in an almost lyrical way. Our friend was sitting under our big apple-tree. Suddenly a huge apple was falling down directly on the friend's head. He stopped praising chickens and complained about our very hard and dangerous apples. We laughed and said: It was Anita, who sent you this apple.
We enjoy you and your very wise cat Eartha Kitt II.
Anita, you said Eartha seemed to say you sounded like a prayer. I'd say more like a preacher, but a very witty one!

Anita, it's so much fun reading your message about owning chickens.
We laughed tears when I printed out your story yesterday. Our family and friends were sitting in the garden. Two friends own even some chickens. One of them praised them in an almost lyrical way. Our friend was sitting under our big apple-tree. Suddenly a huge apple was falling down directly on the friend's head. He stopped praising chickens and complained about our very hard and dangerous apples. We laughed and said: It was Anita, who sent you this apple.
We enjoy you and your very wise cat Eartha Kitt II.

Sandrine darling, you are right. A serious warning! Don't ever listen to Wolfgang Hampel's Betty MacDonald Interviews in public places. I did it in a bus. I felt off my sit because I couldn't stop laughing about this crazy couple. Wolfgang Hampel and Alison Bard Burnett share their witty experiences with family and friends but also about owning chickens. Terribly funny!
This new Betty MacDonald CD and DVD influenced me to write a Betty MacDonald Fan Club Newsletter story about owning chickens. I agree with humor champion Alison Bard Burnett. She got it! When you feel blue you only have to listen to Wolfgang Hampel and Alison Bard Burnett. Don't do it in a childish way like I did. By the way I did hurt myself.
I don't agree with Geoff Taylor's description about owning chickens.
Hens make a soothing clucking noise?
Oh No!!!! They don't. I know it from practice.
They wake you up early in the morning. I'm a longsleeper. I hate their noise. It's just awful.
Everyone should have a dozen chickens?.
Everyone? What is the reason why? I never liked chickens.
They’re far more soothing to the jangled city psyche than colorful fish swimming in a tank on a bookshelf?
Oh dear, Geoff, stop it, please! This is kind of a very romantic feeling. I'm sure Betty MacDonald would hate it and I agree. A back to the country feeling.
I'm a city girl and love my wonderful cat named Eartha, who is as beautiful as Eartha Kitt, catwoman and singer. Wild Eartha is a city girl too and of course we celebrated World Cat Day together.
Chickens give you eggs on your breakfast plate that are better and fresher than Bill Gates eats, unless he also keeps chickens?
Eartha and I don't need eggs, in fact we don't like them. I can't imagine Bill Gates keeps chickens. If so I'd be very disappointed because I adore his intelligence.
So you know how I feel about Geoff Taylor's thoughts.
I'd like to know what our very bright and charming Betty MacDonald Fan Club Honour Members, authors and artists Monica Sone, Darsie Beck and Gwen Grant think about owning chickens. I'm really very curious. I bet they don't like them.

I don't agree with Geoff Taylor's description about owning chickens.
Hens make a soothing clucking noise?
Oh No!!!! They don't. I know it from practice.
They wake you up early in the morning. I'm a longsleeper. I hate their noise. It's just awful.
Everyone should have a dozen chickens?.
Everyone? What is the reason why? I never liked chickens.
They’re far more soothing to the jangled city psyche than colorful fish swimming in a tank on a bookshelf?
Oh dear, Geoff, stop it, please! This is kind of a very romantic feeling. I'm sure Betty MacDonald would hate it and I agree. A back to the country feeling.
I'm a city girl and love my wonderful cat named Eartha, who is as beautiful as Eartha Kitt, catwoman and singer. Wild Eartha is a city girl too and of course we celebrated World Cat Day together.
Chickens give you eggs on your breakfast plate that are better and fresher than Bill Gates eats, unless he also keeps chickens?
Eartha and I don't need eggs, in fact we don't like them. I can't imagine Bill Gates keeps chickens. If so I'd be very disappointed because I adore his intelligence.
So you know how I feel about Geoff Taylor's thoughts.
I'd like to know what our very bright and charming Betty MacDonald Fan Club Honour Members, authors and artists Monica Sone, Darsie Beck and Gwen Grant think about owning chickens. I'm really very curious. I bet they don't like them.
Chickens remain what they are. Stupid!
The world don't need their stupidity. We need more intelligence, tolerance and understanding. That's what we need.
Eartha looks at me and seems to say: Anita, dull chick you sound like a prayer today. You still have to learn a lot!

Betty MacDonald, Mary Bard friend

It'll be such a great moment for us to see Betty MacDonald and listen to her very warm and feminine voice and unique laughter. I don't want to talk only about Betty MacDonald and Mary Bard, but also about the other family members especially Betty MacDonald's and Mary Bard's unforgettable sister Alison Bard Burnett.
Alison Bard Burnett shares very witty experiences with her family, friends and Mike Gordon. Be careful, please. Don't listen to Wolfgang Hampel's Betty MacDonald Interviews in public places like I did. I was sitting in a train and had to laugh so hard all the time. People gave me very strange looks. Alison Bard Burnett is a champion in humor like her sisters Betty MacDonald and Mary Bard. She deserves world wide fame because of this unique ability to make us laugh.

Anne Elizabeth Campbell Bard was born March 26, 1907 in Boulder, Colorado, the second child of Sydney and Darsie Bard. Betsy and her three sisters and brother had an adventurous, somewhat unconventional childhood owing to the strong and creative personalities of their parents and Darsie's mother, "Gammy," and the many lessons in independence they survived gracefully. When Betsy was 12 her father died of pneumonia, but the family's strong relationships and optimism remained intact through this sorrow and the ensuing financial trials.
Betsy (who later preferred the nickname Betty) said that for the Bard children, there were really only two household rules: "We were expected to be polite and to tell the truth, no matter how appalling. "Apart from that, the Bard children did as they pleased and went forth into the world with well-defined personalities, acutely-developed senses of humor and adventure, and a remarkable zest for life.
Betty married at 20 and went to live on a chicken ranch in the Olympic mountains. Her experiences there are chronicled in her first book, The Egg and I . ( see books The Kettles' Million Dollar Egg, The Egg and Betty, The Tragic end of Robert Eugene Heskett by Wolfgang Hampel published by BMC 2009)
Life in such isolation and hardship palled after 4 years and she returned with her two small daughters to her Seattle family just as the Depression hit. The amazing stories of their survival and triumph are related in Anybody Can Do Anything. Betty and her family had a wonderful friend who supported them during this very difficult time.

Alison Bard tells some delightful treasure stories about this wonderful friend.
But Betty's career as a businesswoman was cut short when she contracted pulmonary tuberculosis and entered Firlands, an endowed sanitorium north of Seattle. Lying flat on one's back for 8 1/2 months doesn't seem the stuff of which humor can be made, but Betty did indeed spin gold out of straw, in The Plague and I.

After her recovery, Betty married Donald MacDonald and they moved their family to Vashon Island, leading an idyllic and interesting existence as portrayed in Onions in the Stew. While on Vashon Betty also wrote her works for children: the Mrs. Piggle Wiggle series and Nancy and Plum.
Betty and her husband bought a ranch near Carmel, but illness forced her to move back to Seattle. She died of cancer at the age of 50 on February 7, 1958. Why is Betty's writing so beloved among so many people all over the world? The first and most obvious reason is that it's hilarious - sharp, sometimes irreverent. vivid and unexpected. Betty manages to find humor everywhere: on the early morning streetcar, in a hospital ward, in a home with two cranky adolescents, in job situations from farm work to secretarial duties. To read Betty's writing is to laugh -- often out loud, in public places, whether you want to or not. She has a terrific eye for the absurd and can paint a striking and side-splitting word picture in a few succinct strokes.

Betty's indomitable sister Mary Bard, whom we encounter in all four books but meet most vividly in Anybody Can Do Anything, also went on to write (her first book is dedicated to Betty, "Who Egged Me On"). Mary's books, The Doctor Wears Three Faces, Forty-Odd, Just Be Yourself, and the children's series Best Friends, are also much beloved by Betty fans who find themselves quickly becoming Mary fans as well. Anne Elizabeth Campbell Bard was born March 26, 1907 in Boulder, Colorado, the second child of Sydney and Darsie Bard. Betsy and her three sisters and brother had an adventurous, somewhat unconventional childhood owing to the strong and creative personalities of their parents and Darsie's mother, "Gammy," and the many lessons in independence they survived gracefully. When Betsy was 12 her father died of pneumonia, but the family's strong relationships and optimism remained intact through this sorrow and the ensuing financial trials.
Betsy (who later preferred the nickname Betty) said that for the Bard children, there were really only two household rules: "We were expected to be polite and to tell the truth, no matter how appalling. "Apart from that, the Bard children did as they pleased and went forth into the world with well-defined personalities, acutely-developed senses of humor and adventure, and a remarkable zest for life.
Betty married at 20 and went to live on a chicken ranch in the Olympic mountains. Her experiences there are chronicled in her first book, The Egg and I . ( see books The Kettles' Million Dollar Egg, The Egg and Betty, The Tragic end of Robert Eugene Heskett by Wolfgang Hampel published by BMC 2009)
Life in such isolation and hardship palled after 4 years and she returned with her two small daughters to her Seattle family just as the Depression hit. The amazing stories of their survival and triumph are related in Anybody Can Do Anything. Betty and her family had a wonderful friend who supported them during this very difficult time.

Alison Bard tells some delightful treasure stories about this wonderful friend.
But Betty's career as a businesswoman was cut short when she contracted pulmonary tuberculosis and entered Firlands, an endowed sanitorium north of Seattle. Next Betty MacDonald Fan Club Honour member is a famous writer and artist and President of a world famous Society? I saw a list of possible candidates in Betty MacDonald Fan Club Newsletter. I'm very surprised and impressed. As I'm not Miss Marple II I'm not successful at all in finding this personality.
Cornelia, you can't do things like this. You have to know I'm very impatient and curious. You wrote that Betty MacDonald and Mary Bard would have been crazy about our next Betty MacDonald Fan Club Honour member because you can read this in their books. What are you talking about? I'd need a little help.
I like cats and hate chickens. One of our relatives had a farm and they had chickens!
If you ask me, chickens are very stupid creatures and Betty MacDonald knew them very well.
Some years ago my husband like Betty MacDonald's first husband Robert Eugene Heskett wanted to own a farm but I refused. Daniel wasn't interested in chickens. He liked cows. I said: If this happens we'll have a divorce. We are still married. Daniel is teacher.
I'm convinced Betty MacDonald's and Mary Bard's mother Sydney Bard would criticize my behaviour very much but times haves changed. I love Daniel very much but don't follow him everywhere.
I agree with Betty MacDonald's wonderful sister Alison Bard Burnett, who is very openminded about marriages and divorces in Wolfgang Hampel's Betty MacDonald Interviews.
My family and friends adore Wolfgang Hampel's interviews and his Betty MacDonald and Ma and Pa Kettle biography. More Wolfgang Hampel Interviews should be published. We are huge fans of Wolfgang Hampel satirical poems and stories. Very funny and sharp, indeed.
I notice every time I listen to the Betty MacDonald CD how very different Betty MacDonald's and Alison Bard Burnett's voices are. Betty MacDonald has a rather high voice and she speaks very, very quickly. Nevertheless I love Betty MacDonald's and Alison Bard Burnett's voices and golden laughter.

I like cats and hate chickens. One of our relatives had a farm and they had chickens!
If you ask me, chickens are very stupid creatures and Betty MacDonald knew them very well.
Some years ago my husband like Betty MacDonald's first husband Robert Eugene Heskett wanted to own a farm but I refused. Daniel wasn't interested in chickens. He liked cows. I said: If this happens we'll have a divorce. We are still married. Daniel is teacher.
I'm convinced Betty MacDonald's and Mary Bard's mother Sydney Bard would criticize my behaviour very much but times haves changed. I love Daniel very much but don't follow him everywhere.

I notice every time I listen to the Betty MacDonald CD how very different Betty MacDonald's and Alison Bard Burnett's voices are. Betty MacDonald has a rather high voice and she speaks very, very quickly. Nevertheless I love Betty MacDonald's and Alison Bard Burnett's voices and golden laughter.

Mary Bard, Dr. Clyde Reynolds Jensen

Good morning Mary Bard Society and Betty MacDonald Fan Club Fans,
My mother was a huge Betty MacDonald and Mary Bard fan. She wrote a letter with many questions to Mary Bard Jensen's husband, Dr. Clyde Reynolds Jensen.
I'm convinced Dr. Clyde Reynolds Jensen was the world's most patient and kind doctor and husband, father and friend. Where are these guys today? Mary Bard Jensen was very happy indeed to find such a very rare exemplar.
Dr. Clyde Reynolds Jensen answered my mother's millions of questions in a very friendly and detailed way. I'm not sure at all I would have done this because mother wanted to know so many details. Mother is darling but can nerve at times. My God! This poor man! Mother asked a hole in Dr. Clyde Reynolds Jensen's stomach. Mother wrote back and there are three letters with so many, many information about Mary Bard Jensen, Betty MacDonald, Anne, Joan, Donald MacDonald, Dorothea Goldsmith, Alison Bard Burnett, Cleve Bard, Mary Alice Bard, Madge Baldwin, Darsie Bard and Sydney Bard. Dr. Clyde Reynolds Jensen shares very important info about life in Seattle, Laurelhurst, Chimacum, Carmel, Vashon Island and Firland Sanatorium. I know you will enjoy this very important documents.
I adore Alison Bard Burnett's golden memories of Dr. Clyde Reynolds Jensen in Wolfgang Hampel's Betty MacDonald Interviews. Everybody loved Dr. Clyde Reynolds Jensen and after reading his letters I know the reason why.

Stella, it was World Cat Day. My sisters and I have many cats and they got their World Cat Day gifts. Our children love them. I'm not sure what our husbands think about them. I guess they like dogs, but we are crazy about cats. We know Betty MacDonald owned cats but what about Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle?
She has a cat named Lightfoot and Wag, her dog. Nancy and Plum play with a black mother cat and her three kittens in the barn on Christmas Day. Even Ma and Pa Kettle own a cat.

Writer Gwen Grant Betty MacDonald Fan
This is Gwen Grant,
Dear Betty MacDonald Fan Club Fans,
I've just taken down from my bookshelves the four books of Betty's that I have and they've been read so much, the covers of THE EGG AND I and ONIONS IN THE STEW are a a bit battered! I was interested in the dates they were published and thought others might
be interested, as well.
THE EGG AND I - 1955 - llth impression
THE PLAGUE AND I - 1949
ANYBODY CAN DO ANYTHING - 1951
ONIONS IN THE STEW - Not dated
and 'WHO, ME?' 1960 - a compilation of Betty's work and this has a small photograph of Betty on the cover of the book itself and inside there is a photograph of Betty and two of her grandchildren.
Three of them are Book Club books and they look nothing from the outside - give no idea of the brilliant world within. Opening one of Betty's books is like finding treasure. The 1949 and 1951 books I bought at a Jumble Sale when I was about 17 and had read THE EGG AND I. I felt so fortunate to find them and carried them home as tenderly as if they were eggs! I think they were printed on wartime paper because the paper isn't spectacular. I imagine, though, that there are much older books than these around and just as much loved as mine.
Another fan of Betty's asked recently how old I was when I first read Betty's books - I think I was about 16. I read THE EGG AND I first because from the moment I read that first paragraph, I was hooked. I loved reading about people's lives and that opening paragraph is so instantly appealing.
My own books were much influenced by Betty, especially KNOCK AND WAIT, which is the story of my year at an Open Air School, which was a bit like a Sanatorium but wasn't.
